Ashoka

Mauryan king of India (r.268-233 BC) who brought the Mauryan empire to its zenith by conquering Kalinga in 261. Horrified by war, Ashoka converted to Buddhism, which he made the state religion. His empire broke up through internal factionalism and external pressures in the 50 years after his death.
