A glossary of historical terms
Asante
West African kingdom in the region of today's Ghana that emerged in 1701 under Osei Tutu. Trading slaves with the British and Dutch for firearms, Asante expanded quickly, developing a centralized state, an efficient bureaucracy and good communications. The Asante fiercely resisted British colonization in the 19th century, waging three wars, the last in 1897.
