Arkwright, Richard
British inventor and industrialist (1732-92), whose patents include Arkwright's water frame, capable of producing cotton yarn strong enough to be used as warp. This device allowed the process of cotton production to be mechanized. Arguably as important was his introduction of a modern factory system.
