A glossary of historical terms
Ardipithecus ramidus
The earliest known hominid, dating from about 4.4 million ya. Fossil remains found in Ethiopia show that it was a small animal about the size of a chimpanzee. It is not yet known whether it had developed the upright, bipedal gait of modern humans. This species probably evolved into early australopithecines.
