Archimedes
(c.287-212 BC) Outstanding mathematician of ancient Greece who experimented in fields as varied as astronomy, the measurement of volumes, hydrostatics and notation. He is also remembered for his inventions, such as a screw used to raise water, and ingenious devices to protect his native city of Syracuse from a Roman siege in which he was killed.
