Archangel

Northern Russian port with access to the White Sea. From the 16th century Archangel and Murmansk were the only ports giving Russia direct access to trade with western Europe. Prosperous in the 17th century, they declined after Peter the Great gained access to the Baltic and founded St Petersburg in 1703.
