Arawak
Indigenous farming inhabitants of the Caribbean and South America at the time of the Spanish conquest. They consisted of the Taino of the Greater Antilles, who were displaced by the warlike Carib people just before the arrival of the Spanish, and the Amazon Arawak, who had remained distinct from the people of the Andes. The Caribbean Arawak were wiped out by disease and the Spanish conquest.
