Aramaic

Semitic language widely adopted in the Middle East following the Aramaean migrations and the development of a written form, using a phonetic script derived from the Canaanite alphabet (by c.1100 BC). It was adopted by the Assyrians about 800 BC and replaced cuneiform as the chief script of the region.
