Arab-Israeli conflict

Conflict caused by failure to resolve the problem of the survival and security of Israel and the existence of Arab Palestine. Four wars - 1948, 1956, 1967 (the Six Day War) and 1973 (the Yom Kippur War) - were fought and in 1977 the Palestine Liberation Organization decided that Arab Palestine must be located in Gaza and the West Bank. Resolution of the conflict is currently the subject of extended sessions between the Israelis and the Palestine National Authority, whose elected leader (since 1996) is Yassir Arafat.
