Aquitania, Aquitaine
The area enclosed by the Garonne, Pyrenees and Bay of Biscay. It was inhabited by the Gaulish tribes of the Aquitani, who were conquered by the Romans between 56 and 27 BC. Under Augustus, Aquitania became an imperial province extending as far north as the Loire, and prospered from agriculture and trade. It was settled by the Visigoths in the early 5th century.
