Aquino, Corazon

(1933-2009) Filipino politician, wife of Senator Benigno Aquino (1932-83). When her husband was assassinated in 1983, Corazon Aquino took up her husband's cause and led a campaign of non-violent civil disturbance during the 1986 People Power Revolution. President Ferdinand Marcos was eventually toppled and fled to Hawaii. In 1986, she became president and the country's first female president. She was named TIME Magazine's 'Woman of the Year'. Her term ended in 1992 and she was succeeded by Fidel V. Ramos. Corazon Aquino's son Benigno III also became president on June 30th, 2010.
