Aquileia

Site of a Roman colony founded in 181 BC at the head of the Adriatic - a strategic position controlling routes across the Julian Alps, the trade in Baltic amber and local gold deposits. It became a military, commercial and industrial center, and one of the largest cities in the world, with about 100,000 inhabitants. It was sacked by Attila in AD 452 but revived in the Middle Ages.
