Anyang

The last and most enduring of the Shang capital cities ('Yin', c.1400-1100 BC), situated on a tributary of the Yellow river in Honan province, China. The urban settlement surrounded a palace and temple complex built on a massive platform of rammed earth. All buildings were constructed of timber and clay with thatch roofs, some elaborately painted. Stone and jade carvings, oracle bones and evidence of bronze working and pottery manufacture have been found at the site. Its royal cemetery had at least 14 richly furnished tombs with grave goods that included magnificently decorated bronze vessels and human and animal sacrifices.
