A glossary of historical terms
Antiochus III
The most successful of the Seleucid kings (r.223-187 BC), known as 'the Great'. He re-established his dynasty's control over much of the old Persian empire, including Babylon, but his attempt to regain influence in Greece led to a successful counteroffensive by Rome. Antiochus was humbled and his kingdom lost the west coast of Asia.
