Ansei Treaties
Treaties between several western countries and Japan following Matthew Perry's second visit to Japan in 1854. There was pressure on Japan to establish full commercial relations, and in July 1858 the first US consul, Townshend Harris, concluded the US-Japan Treaty of Amity and Commerce. This and subsequent treaties were unequal, as the rights enjoyed by westerners in Japan were not reciprocated.
