Angola

Portuguese colony developed from a southern African base for the slave trade with Brazil, established by the Portuguese at Luanda in 1575. By the early 17th century Angola was exporting 5,000-10,000 slaves a year, and little colonization occurred while the slave trade was profitable. Angola became independent in 1975.
