Anglo-Japanese Naval Alliance
A diplomatic reaction in 1902 to Russian expansion in the Far East. In the event of war between an ally and one country, the other ally would remain neutral. If one ally were attacked by two enemies, the other would come to its aid. The Royal Navy was thus freed from major Far Eastern commitments and the Japanese navy had a free hand in operations against Russia.
