A glossary of historical terms
Amiens, Treaty of
Treaty signed by Britain, France, Holland and Spain in 1802, marking a brief respite in the Napoleonic wars. George III of Britain was required to abandon the title of king of France and restore Malta to the Knights of St John, the South African Cape to the Dutch and Egypt to the Ottoman empire. Britain distrusted Napoleon's intentions and declared war again on 16 May 1803.
