A glossary of historical terms

Amboina

City of the Moluccas, East Indies, important for the clove trade. The Portuguese established a settlement in 1521, which the Dutch captured in 1605. An English settlement was destroyed by the Dutch in 1623. This won the Dutch almost total control of the spice trade.
