Alva, Fernando Alvarez de

Also known as the Duke of Alba. Spanish soldier and statesman (1507-82), notorious for his harsh governorship of the Netherlands (1567-73), where he established the Council of Troubles - the 'Council of Blood'. He lacked resources to crush the Dutch Revolt, and Philip II lost confidence in him. He later commanded an invasion of Portugal in 1580.
