Almeida, Francisco de

Portuguese soldier and explorer (c.1450-1510). The first governor of India (1505-09), he erected forts in an attempt to monopolize the spice trade, and defeated a combined Indian and Egyptian fleet at Diu in February 1509 to protect the Portuguese spice trade.
