Alexius I Comnenus

Byzantine emperor (r.1081-1118) who saved the Byzantine empire from the Normans of southern Italy and the Pechenegs by using the aid of first Venice and then the Cumans. He profited from the defeat of the Seljuk Kilij Arslan by using the First Crusade to recapture territory in Anatolia.
