A glossary of historical terms
Alexander VI
Pope (r.1492-1503). Born Rodrigo Borgia in 1431, his pontificate was marked by scandals (his illegitimate children included Cesare and Lucrezia Borgia), and by his ruthless pursuit of political and dynastic aims. He thwarted French ambitions in Italy, but also discredited the Papacy, thereby contributing to the development of the Protestant Reformation.
