Celtic stronghold in Central Gaul (modern France) and the site of the last stand of Vercingetorix - the most formidable of the Celtic leaders - against Julius Caesar in 52 BC. The defeat of Vercingetorix after a long and difficult siege allowed Gaul to become incorporated into the Roman empire.
