A glossary of historical terms

Alemanni

A group of Germanic peoples who began raiding across the borders of the Roman empire in the mid-3rd century AD, reaching as far south as Italy. They were never truly defeated. The French word for Germany, 'Allemagne', is a reminder of their impact.
