Ala-ud-Din Khalji
Khalji Sultan of Delhi (r.1296-1316). He came to power by assassinating his uncle, Sultan Jalal-ud-Din Firuz Khalji. Ala-ud-Din gave the sultanate a stable economic basis through a heavy land tax to maintain a full-time army. He repulsed the Mongols from India several times and extended the Delhi sultanate's control south of the Narmada river for the first time.
