A glossary of historical terms
Akbar
Mughal emperor (r.1556-1605). At the start of his reign he ruled just Delhi and the Punjab, but gradually he recovered lost territories and extended his empire over much of India, annexing Bengal (1576), Kashmir (1586), and Gandhara (1595). He did much to consolidate his rule by conciliating and winning the loyalty of non-Muslims through religious tolerance.
