Ajanta
Sacred Buddhist site in Maharashtra state, western India, some 106 kilometers (66 miles) northwest of Aurangabad. It comprises temples and monasteries carved by hand from the rock face between the 1st century BC and the 7th century AD, and adorned with fine carvings and frescoes of Buddhist legends. The caves were rediscovered in 1819.
