A glossary of historical terms

Air, kingdom of

Tuareg kingdom of west Africa, in modern Niger, founded in the 11th century and Islamic since the 14th century. It was conquered by the Songhai ruler Askia Mohammed by about 1515. In 1906 it was occupied by the French, who after a revolt in 1917 expelled most of the Tuareg population.
