Ain Jalut, Battle of

The defeat of the Mongols by the Mamluke army of Baibars in Palestine in 1260. The expansion of the Mongol Ilkhanate was checked and the Mamlukes assured as heirs of the Ayyubid empire in Syria and Palestine. Until this battle the Crusader States had hoped to ally with the Mongols against the Mamlukes.
