Ahmad Shah Durrani

Founder of a unified Afghan state (r.1747-73). He ruled a large area of northwest India, sacked Delhi and Agra in 1757, and defeated the Marathas in 1761. He failed to conquer the Sikhs in the 1760s, and subsequently lost control of the Punjab.
