A glossary of historical terms

African National Congress (ANC)

A multiracial nationalist movement founded in 1912 to end racial discrimination in what was then the Union of South Africa. The ANC was banned (1960-90) and undertook sabotage and guerrilla war. In 1994 its leader Nelson Mandela was sworn in as the first black president of the republic of South Africa.
