Aetolia

Mountainous region of west-central Greece that remained outside the mainstream of Greek history until the 4th century BC, when it founded the Aetolian league. The league absorbed neighboring cities and shrines, including Delphi, in the 3rd century BC, but its forces were defeated by Rome in 168 BC.
