Aethelbald

King of the Mercians (r.716-57) who campaigned vigorously against the Welsh, the Northumbrians and the West Saxons. He is credited with reforming the English Church, but he violated ecclesiastical property. He was murdered and buried in a Roman-style mausoleum.
