Aeolia, Aeolian Greeks

According to legend, refugees from the Greek mainland after the collapse of the Mycenaean world in the 11th century BC. They settled on the west coast of Asia Minor, including the island of Lesbos, where they retained a distinctive dialect and developed their own style of architecture. Like other Greeks, they developed city-states (polis) from the 8th century BC.
