A glossary of historical terms

Adulis

An ancient port on the Red Sea coast of Axum (now in Eritrea) and important staging post in the trade between the Mediterranean and southern Arabia, east Africa and the Indian Ocean. It was probably founded by the Egyptians and became prominent in the mid-3rd century BC, boosted by Ptolemaic trade.
