Adrianople

City of northern Thrace, funded by Hadrian in about AD 125. It was the site of a battle in AD 378, at which the Roman emperor Valens was killed by the Visigoths and Ostrogoths. The new emperor Theodosius supplied food to the Goths in return for help in defending the border against other intruders. The city was taken by the Turks in 1361 and renamed Edirne.
