Adowa

City of northern Ethiopia and the scene of Emperor Menelik II's victory over Italian imperialists in 1896, leading to the independence of Ethiopia - the only example of successful African resistance against a European power. Adowa was captured during the 1935 Italian invasion of Ethiopia and liberated in 1941.
