Adenauer, Konrad

(1876-1967) West German statesman. A Centre Party politician before the Nazis took power, he joined the Christian Democratic Party after World War II and became the first chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949. He secured its full membership of NATO and a leading role in the European Economic Community, and, with Ludwig Erhard, presided over Germany's transformation into Western Europe's leading industrial nation.
