A glossary of historical terms
Aden
Seaport in the southwest of the Arabian peninsula and now part of the republic of Yemen. It was occupied by Britain in 1839 and governed as part of British-ruled India to 1937, when it was made a Crown Colony with West Aden a protectorate. The two united in 1963 to form the federation of South Arabia, and British troops left in 1967. The federation united with East Aden to form the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, which in 1990 united with the Yemen Arab Republic (formerly North Yemen) to form Yemen.
