A glossary of historical terms

Adal

Islamic state of east Africa in the 14th to the 16th centuries. Its capital was at Harer in modern Ethiopia. its ruler Ahmed Gran (d.1543) invaded Ethiopia, taking much of the country by 1533; Portuguese intervention prevented total conquest. Adal collapsed in the late 16th century under invasions by the nomadic Oromo.
