Actium, Battle of

Battle of 31 BC in which Octavian (Augustus) blockaded the fleet of Mark Antony and Cleopatra at Actium on the Ambracian Gulf in northwest Greece. Although Mark Antony and Cleopatra managed to evade the blockade and escape south, this defeat meant the loss of their campaign; each of them committed suicide.
