Acre

Town on the Palestinian seaboard, known in the Hebrew Scriptures as Akko and in Greek as Ptolemais. A naval base for the Fatimid caliphate, it was captured by the Frankish Crusaders in 1104. Lost to Saladin in 1187 and regained three years later by the Third Crusade, it was effectively the capital of the kingdom of Jerusalem until its final fall to the Mamlukes in 1291.
