Acadia

A North American colony of France, called Nova Scotia by the British. First settled in 1604 by Pierre de Monts and Samuel Champlain on an island in Passamaquaddy Bay, it changed hands a number of times in the 17th century between England and France before finally being retained by the British in 1710. The French-speaking settlers of Acadia were expelled in 1755, many of them settling in what later became the American state of Louisiana.
