A glossary of historical terms
Abu Simbel
The site of two massive rock temples built by the Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses II (r.c.1290-1224 BC) on the Nile, 250 kilometers (155 miles) south of Aswan. The largest temple is fronted by four colossal statues of Ramesses. The smaller temple is dedicated to Nefertari, Ramesses' queen. In the 1960s, the temples were lifted and reconstructed above the waters of Lake Nasser.
