A glossary of historical terms
Abu al-Abbas
The first Abbasid caliph (r. 750-754), who transformed the Abbasids from a revolutionary movement to a dynasty. After the defeat of the Umayyads in 750 there remained only scattered resistance to the new dynasty. Those who did resist were eliminated by al-Abbas with fearsome violence. His victims included those of his own chiefs whom he suspected of having gained too great an authority.
