Abd al-Rahman III

First caliph of Muslim Spain (r. 912-961). After establishing political unity in Cordoba, he attacked Spain's Christian rulers and competed against the Fatimids in north Africa. At his death Muslim Spain was prosperous and peaceful, and Cordoba was the most sophisticated city west of Constantinople.
