Abd al-Rahman I

Restorer of the Umayyad dynasty in Spain. Fleeing the Abbasid conquest, he gathered support from Berber tribes in the Maghreb and invaded Iberia in 755. After defeating the governor Yusuf al-Fihri and successive revolts in the 760s, he established Umayyad rule at Cordoba and maintained it until his death in 788.
