The Secretary of State for Education has clearly stated his guidelines for the History Working Group. Much of this will be based upon recommendations from his own inspectors who said in 1988 'the school curriculum provides one of the fundamental ways in which a society transmits its cultural heritage to new generations'. We all carry our own past about with us, but each of us individually makes a unique interpretation. There are many 'pasts' and many 'heritages'. We must ensure that future generations have an adequate knowledge of the past and develop the skills in school to understand the complex nature of human history.
