History That Matters

Fiona Kisby reviews a recent conference on history education and offers a personal view on the aims, nature and significance of history in British schools.


Britain, by promoting dialogue between a heterogeneous mix of professionals and highlighting current debates on what and how history should be taught. Papers covered issues relating to the structure, content and aims of the history curriculum in schools and universities and its significance and ‘relevance’ to young people and the wider goals of schooling and higher education; the nature of students’ historical understanding and progression and the preconceptions and misunderstandings they bring to their studies; the relationship between school and university history; the role and nature of assessment and issues raised by public exams; and the relationship between history and citizenship education and the creation of national identity.
